Well, the greenhouse plans are pretty much ready for the permit. It’s been a busy spring and the greenhouse construction has been delayed a good bit. It will definitely need to be ready for fall. We plan to have early seedlings next year so we can keep improving our system.

It’s a basic wood construction. It will need some reinforcements to stay put in the winds we’ve had. The roof and walls will have clear, UV protected polycarbonate sheets. Cooling in the summer will be made possible with lots of ventilation and a water mist. Heating in the winter will be a combination of a passive solar radiant floor heating, forced convection solar heating as well as thermal mass inside the greenhouse.

Hopefully, the permit will be in hand by the end of next week so more construction can begin. The floor reflector, tubing and gravel will go in first. 4 yards of gravel will be moved from the driveway to the back yard. Anyone else want to grab a shovel and wheelbarrow?

It looks like we’re getting rid of a chicken tomorrow. Cheese has been a bit aggressive towards the other girls and it’s time for her to go. She’s going to a good home where she more likely will get to roam the streets at night and lay her eggs under parked cars.

We’re planting a few strawberry plants in pots to ‘over winter’ them in the garage. Hopefully, there will be a lot of yummy strawberries growing on them in the spring.

A beautiful Texas sunset.

Nearly caught up with the farm blog posting again. Things have been hectic with redesigning our schedules around the 1st grade.

The weather has been nice and cool for the last week and a half. We’re actually getting a lot of rain but now we need some more sun to go with it.

Once the weather clears, I’ll finish building the chicken pen. The progress has been a slow-go with weather issues and the farm truck needed new brakes.

The Honeydews, Butternut squash, corn and peas are all doing really well. It was a hot, difficult summer but most of our tomatoes fared well and are still producing.

Unfortunately, we’ll be giving up one of our chickens. Cheese, the chicken has been a bit unruly and picking on the other chickens. Instead of having the farm’s first execution, we’ll be looking for a neighbor or friend who would like to have a solo yard bird.
